Innovative Model for the Wise and Competent Mode in schema therapy for children and adolescents
Starting from exploring the guidelines developed in schema therapy interventions for children and adolescents, also diving into the scientific exploration (psychological theories and empirical research) we have outlined a new model of Wise and Competent Mode, adding novel and innovative elements and contributing to the development of the Schema Therapy model for children and adolescents.
The novelty and creativity of this model lies in structuring the skills and competences that children need to develop in order to strengthen the “Wise and Competent Mode” into 12 categories (pillars). This structure should be the core of the case conceptualization and of the therapeutical protocol in schema therapy for children and adolescents. This model also embodies applied integrative third wave CBT approaches, in a unified working model aimed to help children reach awareness of their uniqueness, in terms of cognitive, emotional and body focused skills and competences.
What stands out as innovative in the approach presented here is the methodological framework of awareness and intervention for the skills and abilities children need in order to strengthen the ‘Wise and Competent Mode’, the integrative toolkit of techniques that bridges the mind and the body, plus a graphical support for each pillar (12 characters, that represent these skills as inner components, gender neutral and age neutral).
The model was integrated and included in a GST CA protocol which was validated in a pilot study in 2024-2026 and it was already presented at the most important conferences in the field.
