Training

The clinical interview: science, competence and the clinical encounter

An intensive workshop designed for psychologists and psychotherapists who wish to develop their clinical interviewing skills into a rigorous, reflective and deeply human practice. Clinical interviewing is not merely about asking the right questions. It is a complex process of co-constructing meaning, where every intervention shapes the data gathered, and every response either confirms or refutes hypotheses. In this workshop, you will learn to navigate between scientific rigour and relational flexibility, between observation and interpretation, between guidance and collaboration.

Through a combination of interactive presentations, case studies and experiential exercises, you will directly practise the essential skills of modern clinical interviewing: from formulating questions to integrating data into coherent case reports.

Workshop objectives

By the end, participants will be able to:

  • Use the clinical interview as a collaborative process of assessment and hypothesis formulation
  • Formulate non-leading, clear questions adapted to the cultural context
  • Conduct a mental status examination with a rigorous distinction between observation and interpretation
  • Conduct interviews in high-risk contexts (suicidal, trauma) in a safe and ethical manner
  • Identify and manage ambivalence and resistance during assessment
  • Integrate the data obtained into coherent and collaborative case reports
